WATER ABSORBENCY

Dry glass mosaics are dipped into the boiling water for two hours, afterwards, they are kept in water for four hours to cool off. Weight difference is measures in order to decide whether there is water absorbency. The result of this test A = 0,1%

According to classification
A < 3% low water absorbency
3% < A < 10% Average water absorbency
A> 10% high water absorbency

ABRASION RESISTANCE

In the test that is conducted by the contact of the abrasive substances (steel balls, aluminum oxide, water) on the Glass Mosaic surface, the glass mosaic samples that were subject to abrasion evaluation test and those that were not subject to the mentioned test were visually compared. The grade obtained as a result of this test was 2 and on the 600th cycle the abrasion deficiencies were visually conspicuous. General grades were between 0 - 5; this is from a lower resistance to a higher one.

FREEZING RESISTANCE

Freezing and melting procedures were performed 100 times on the glass mosaics. Glass mosaic temperature is lowered down to -5oC and kept for 15 minutes, then, the temperature is raised to +5oC and kept for 15 minutes. At the end of this test procedure, no damage occurred on the surface and edges of the mosaics.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE

The glass mosaics are dipped into the solutions given in the following schema.

Chemical Resistance Test Solutions Results
House Cleaning Products Ammonium Chloride A
Swimming Pool Salts Sodium Hypochloride A
Acid and Base, Chlorhydric Acid A
Weak Concentration Citric Acid A
Potassium Hydroxide A
Acid and Base, Chlorhydric Acid A
Strong Concentration Potassium Hydroxide A
Classification is as A, B, C and A defines the best result.

RESISTANCE AGAINST STAINING

Glass Mosaics are dipped into different stain leaving substances and cleaning procedure from the simplest to the most complex is applied. This test has results in five categories. The best result is 5 and it decreases towards 1.

Stain Type Stain Factor Result
Green Stain leaving Residue 5
Rust stains formed as a result of chemical action 5
Stains forming a thin membrane olive oil 5

SCRATCH HARDNESS

When performed according to Mohe scale, the test result obtained by rubbing some materials with hands on the glass mosaic surface is 5. Grades were between 0 - 10 and it is listed from the best to the least.

ACCCELERATED WEAR

In this procedure, the glass mosaics were dipped into cold-hot cycle 25 times. It is kept at room temperature for 4 hours, in water at 85oC for 4 hours and in a box at -15oC for 18 hours. After the realization of the test, there is no effect to be reported concerning the glass mosaics.
